18.03.2004 Romania's way into the European Union Strengthening Democracy: precondition of the adhesion
The economic and social stability - the main elements for political balance- must be enlarged in Europe in May 2004 through the historical opportunity of the adhesion of 10 countries into the European Union. This is a big step forward for the unification of European People under the protection of democratic values. But in May 2004 the great challenge for all the countries begins. Romania and Bulgaria will be the last ones from those 12 candidate countries ; it is planned for them to be integrated in 2007. Concerning Romania, the present situation requires the strengthening of democracy - especially respect of the democratic opposition - in order to set the base for real democratic life. The elimination of political control over public administration structures, the elimination of the elements which sustain corruption as well as the recovery of trust in justice has to be accomplished by the Romanian government in a very short time. It is urgent that the reform in justice and public administration, abolishing any abuse of public services, and the setting up of real democratic life in Romanian society will be achieved in view of the integration in 2007. The civil society in Romania as well as the trade unions support effectively the integration process, but the responsibility for this lies within the Romanian government. The achievement of this goal depends on the way the government will obtain the support of the civil society or the social partners. It is necessary to make contributions to realise a real civil dialogue and a real social dialogue, leading to a responsible partnership, not a formal one.
The
European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW) consists of 23
workers' organisations from 15 countries and is an association of the
European People's Party (EPP).
