Restore Democracy in Moldova - Respect human rights - Secure Independence from Russia

Declaration of the Board of the EUCDW

Being deeply worried about the developments in the Republic of Moldova, the EUCDW declares the following: We support completely the endeavour of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to live free in a united Europe. Since the Communist Party came to power after the parliamentary elections of February 2001, it has established a totalitarian regime. The democratic institutions have been suppressed through the modification of the legislation and the exertion of power by the government in abusive manners. The political strategy in a soviet style imposed by the former communists has lead to the flagrant infringement of the country's international commitments and people's fundamental rights and liberties.

The European Union of Christian Democratic Workers expresses its solidarity with its colleagues from the Christian Democratic People's Party in their fight for freedom, democracy and a European perspective of their country.

In accordance with the position of the Council of Europe the EUCDW demands to

  • to re-establish the independence of the judicial power;
  • to re-establish the local autonomy;
  • to transform the national television and radio stations in an unrestricted public institution of free audio-visual broadcast;
  • to respect the rights of assembly, free circulation, free association, and freedom of speech;
  • to stop the penal and administrative prosecution against the leaders of CDPP and their sympathizers;
  • to stop the ideological interferences in the process of education and the process of the russification of the society.

Russian Federation maintains its troops and military arsenal on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, counter to the provisions of the Constitution of this country and in a glaring contradiction with the norms of international law. This situation affects seriously the independence and the territorial unity of the Republic of Moldova, supporting the separatism, terrorism, smuggling with weapons and organized crime. Illegal military presence of the Russia in this region troubles the whole Europe.

The EUCDW appeals to the leadership of the Russian Federation to respect the norms of the international law and its own commitment, and to withdraw completely, non-conditioned, orderly and in the established time limits its bodies and military arsenal from the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

The European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW) consists of 23 workers' organisations from 15 countries and is an association of the European People's Party (EPP).
