Open markets for a better world
EUCDW protests against protectionist US customs

The European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW) protests against the present American plans to increase customs on foreign steel products from eight to 30 percent. The plan, which also includes import quotas, is to protect the American steel industry.

The EUCDW sees a violation against the concepts of free exchange of goods in this restriction of international trade. It seems that representatives of the pure market teachings are only demanding liberal trade structures when they are in their own interest.

The EUCDW asks the American government, especially President George W. Bush, to build together a system of open and fair trade, which considers not only economic criteria but also social and ecological criteria. Everyone would then profit from this.

The European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW) consists of 23 workers' organisations from 15 countries and is an association of the European People's Party (EPP).
